If you’re a first-time homeowner, you may be surprised to learn that one of the easiest ways to keep your HVAC system running efficiently is by changing the air filter. It’s a simple task that helps improve indoor air quality, protects your system from unnecessary wear, and can even lower energy costs.

As a general rule, check your air filter every month and replace it every 60 to 90 days. If you have pets, allergies, or a busy household, you may need to change it more often. Click here for the different types of air filters.

Changing Your Air Filter in 5 Easy Steps

1. Turn Off Your HVAC System at the Thermostat

Before replacing the filter, set your thermostat to “OFF.” There’s no need to turn the system off at the breaker for a routine filter change. This prevents the system from running and pulling dust into the return while the filter is removed.

2. Find the Air Filter

Most filters are located in the return air vent or inside the indoor HVAC unit. If you’re unsure where yours is, your owner’s manual can help.

3. Remove the Old Filter

Slide the filter out and take note of the airflow arrows printed on the side. These arrows show the direction the air flows through the system.

4. Install the New Filter

Insert the new filter with the arrows pointing toward the HVAC unit (in the direction of airflow). Make sure it fits securely without bending.

5. Turn the System Back On

Once the new filter is securely in place, set your thermostat back to your desired setting and let your HVAC system get back to keeping your home comfortable.

Don’t Forget!

Set a reminder on your phone or calendar to check your filter every month. A clean filter helps your HVAC system breathe easier, reduces strain on equipment, and keeps your home more comfortable year-round.
