What is a SEER Rating?

Posted on: July 27th, 2020 by tcg_admin

If you’re in the market for a new air conditioner, you might want to check the SEER rating before buying.

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures the ratio of cooling capacity to power input. The higher the SEER rating, the more work you’re getting out of the equipment for the same dollar amount of energy.

Air conditioners on the market today range from 13 to 25 SEER. The higher the number, the more efficient the unit, and the more you’ll save on utility bills.

Nationwide, EPA standards require all air conditioners manufactured after January 1, 2015, to have a minimum rating of 14 SEER.

The rating itself is determined through calculations of a unit’s average performance – the amount of cooling an AC system puts out per the units of energy it uses to do so.

The less energy used, the higher the SEER rating. As the number increases, we get a higher efficiency system, which means lower utility bills.

How much you’ll actually save on your utility bill depends on the size of your house and how much you pay per kilowatt-hour for electricity, the SEER rating of the unit, and what it’s currently costing you to cool your home. There is an energy savings calculator at energy.gov.

If your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it might be a good time for you to replace your unit with a newer, higher efficiency rated system.

Action Air can determine the size you will need for your home and you can decide the amount of SEER you’ll want to spend on. For most homeowners, opting for a unit with a SEER between 15 and 18 is a good choice because it’s a balance between the money you’ll spend for the unit and the amount you may save on utility bills.

If you suspect there is something wrong with your air conditioning unit, call Action Air. Our knowledgeable technicians will provide you with the proper assessment and provide options to repair your equipment or suggest an upgrade to a newer model.

Why Is My A/C Unit Leaking?

Posted on: June 18th, 2020 by tcg_admin

There are many reasons why this could be happening. Action Air wants you to be informed about the causes and what to do about them.

The primary function of your air conditioning system is to remove the humidity from your home. When your A/C unit runs, warm air flows across the cold evaporator coil and as the coil absorbs the heat from the air, it collects moisture. Much like a glass of cold water on a hot day. The moisture then drips down into a condensate pan and runs into a condensate line to the outside of your home. The warmer and more humid it is inside your home, the more the condensation builds and the more forceful the water is sent through the drain system.

If you notice water around your A/C unit, mold growing, or you experience increased humidity in your home, this could be signs that your unit needs servicing.
